Patience to Connect the Pieces

(Today I’m participating in Five Minute Friday with Lisa-Jo Baker. It’s a flash mob of writers writing for five minutes with stopping to edit, over-think, or re-do. If you’d like to join in, just head over to Gypsy Mama. This Friday’s prompt is connect.)

Do people that work jigsaw puzzles have more patience than those that can’t stand them?

My husband loves puzzles. Over the course of several Christmases (perhaps ten?), he sat and worked on a 2,000 piece puzzle filled with varying snowmen. So many snowmen that all blended into one another so that you can’t count how many there are. It’s now framed and hanging in our bedroom, a testament to his superhuman patience.

I can’t stand them. In an effort to share an activity with my husband, I tried – I really did – to sit down and work on the puzzle with him. I carefully selected pieces and handed them to him, discussing (calmly and rationally) where they might fit, how it might look when it’s done, isn’t the scarf (only partial at this point, however) on that one so cute.

But I didn’t last long. Those little cardboard pieces of white with bits of blue and red and green mixed in just sat and mocked me. And just when I thought I had a piece ready to fit in, they would all jump around and change locations on the table. Frustration overtook me. I couldn’t keep up the charade of interest in connecting the pieces. I didn’t have the patience.

I don’t wait well on God either. If he could just drop a neon sign in my front yard that would give me a direct and obvious revelation, that would connect the pieces of life. . . .

Do you have the patience for jigsaw puzzles? What about the patience to wait for God's will?

  1. I, too, have a husband that loves jigsaw puzzles. I, too, do not share that love or that patience. I pray that this is not a reflection of my attitude toward God, but more, that it is a reflection of my tendency to get caught up in the details and, thus, to miss the bigger picture. May God be kind and patient as he pieces together the puzzle that is me.

  2. Oh I actually do enjoy puzzles. My Cowboy and I work them together. Your so right about patience. Sometimes (most times) I don't have as much as I need. I am looking for the right road to take and wishing God would just show me the way. It is hard to wait for his perfect timing!
Thanks for sharing your heart today.
