A Mom's Prayer for the New Year

Father God,

A new year is upon us, and we thank you for this blessing of the gift of time. Time to know you more, time to serve you further, time to bless those around us and nurture relationships. Teach us, Lord, to number our days and give us wisdom to see and seize every opportunity You bring our way.

In this insanely busy world, Lord, with so many obligations and distractions pulling us in so many different directions, lead us to moments of quiet communion with You, resolved to read, study, and know Your Word. Make it so natural for us, Lord, that it is like breathing, an activity we simply cannot get through the day without. Open our eyes to see the difference between an obligation and a distraction, focusing on the former and dismissing the latter.

Through the sleepless nights of nursing sick children and the caffeinated days of managing a home, we pray that You would be by our side, comforting, encouraging, filling us with Your love and grace and strength.

Although we're a bit timid to pray for it, we ask for patience, or perhaps we should ask for perseverance. A graceful attitude would be helpful as well. When the grapefruit squirts us in the eye, help us not to murmur. When the baby's diaper leaks on our new skirt, help us to smile at the new life in our laps and go change without complaint. When the eggs burn in the skillet, help us to see the sunny side up.

As we fill in the little boxes on our calendars with appointments, to-do's, and goals, may we seek Your guidance and direction in each little square. And yet, Lord, don't let us hem You in, but see Your Will and have the courage to obey it as You lead us through this new year.

Help us to hear your whisper of sweet somethings, your assurances of peace, your comfort, even your conviction. Give us courage, Lord, and help us to throw off the shackles of worry of what others think and do Your Will, making changes in our lives that honor and glorify and point others toward You.

In Jesus’ precious and most holy name, amen!

In this new year, for what are you praying?

  1. "Amen" to your requests. And I'm praying that I will comprehend what it means to pray without ceasing and find that sweet communion with my Lord trumps an idle mind. :) We have not because we ask not. Ask. We serve a God who will not give a stone when we ask for bread. Ask!
p.s. I'm glad to see you back to blogging!

    1. Thanks, Deb. It always takes a couple of weeks before it sinks in that we're in a new year, so I'll be praying this for a while. :-)

  4. Oh, I missed your sweet calming words last week. You are such a good example of a Christlike mother. :) This year I am praying for the courage to stay calm and kind with my children. To trust that encouragement and practical consequences can teach effectively. I know I'm going to be doing a lot of praying and asking for His help throughout my day. I just want to learn to stop and pray for help before I hurt someones feelings. (Over share!)
