Pretty in Pink on a Gray Day and a Lilla Rose Giveaway ~ My Daughter’s Modest Monday

Winter continues to hang on where we live, and my Facebook newsfeed continues to flood with friends in agony over the delay of spring.

So, my contribution to improving your mood is this pop of color on my 8yo. J

Wearing bright colors on dull days can improve a mood a hundredfold!

Isn’t this denim skirt snazzy? Is it okay to say that if I made it? J The denim is so durable, it has withstood three little girls. And who couldn’t love that whimsical pink flower pattern?

When I first made it, I rolled up a humongous hem so that I could continue to let it out as the daughter grew. But the second daughter grew into it before I could let the hem out for the first daughter. When I did let it out, there were crease marks faded into the denim. Bummer!

American Girls to the rescue! My oldest and I were reading the Kit series about that time, and we loved reading all of their money-saving techniques during the Great Depression. One trick was to sew rick-rack over a crease to fancy up a dress and cover up the evidence that it had been let out. I can’t say I’m a fan of rick-rack, but the jazzy pink ribbon did the trick!

What the 8yo wore ~

Denim skirt ~ simple elastic waist skirt made by me for older sister and handed down
Bright pink ruffled shirt ~ Kohl’s sale and given for birthday gift
Light pink short sleeve shirt ~ Wal-Mart?
Navy knee-highs ~ Christmas gift from Nana
Navy Mary Jane’s ~ Payless sale and handed down

Hair frill ~ $1 at craft festival, held in place with a clear clip

~~~~~~~~~~
AND…drum roll, please…a Lilla Rose giveaway!
I was {still am} overwhelmed by the outpouring of encouragement and support over last Monday’s post. I shared my misgivings about continuing this My Daughter’s Modest Monday series, and you were wonderful to encourage me to continue.
Thank you!! J
Since I want my appreciation to take a more tangible form, I’m giving away a Lilla Rose clip, up to $16 in value. Sound good?
All you have to do is leave a comment or send me an email by Friday, March 14, 2014, at midnight, to let me know you want to be entered in the drawing.
I’m not using the Rafflecopter widget because some of you don’t tweet or can’t leave a comment. I want everyone to have an equal chance for winning, so one entry per person. Of course, I would appreciate it if you liked my Lilla Rose Facebook page, signed up to receive my blog posts by email, or tweeted about the giveaway. But that’s not required to be entered. J
Thanks again, and I’ll announce the winner next Monday.
What colors do you like to wear to brighten up a gloomy day?
  5. I'm not on facebook, but always enjoy your posts. Love the idea of using ribbon to cover hem lines!
    I like to wear anything bright on a dreary day -- especially red. It's sunny here finally -- actually had a nice Sunday & looks like today is more of the same. :)
    Thanks for a chance to win a flexi -- I wear one almost every day & my youngest 2 girls, almost every Sunday.
    You're still my favorite blog to begin my day!
    always, in Christ
  6. I don't always get over here but I do enjoy your daughter's modest Monday. I have a little 7mo old girl and I love dressing her in pretty, modest things. I'm sure the more mobile she gets the more fun it will be to keep her modest. =)
    1. Shorts or bloomers underneath a skirt will do the trick, Amanda. Wish I had thought of that when my girls were little! :-)
  9. I'd like to be entered. I love to wear pink as well to brighten up the dull days! And I've been thinking about making skirts for my daughter that can be let out because she grows so fast, now I know a trick for the worn hem! Thanks!
  11. Love to enter....but even more important, love the encouragement from your blog...please continue to be a faithful example and witness that we all need around us...so pleased beyond measure to be able to show my girls (even though they are older), such a great example of modesty that your family provides...it lets them see, it is not "just us" in this pursuit of modesty....LOVE the ribbon idea....that and if they get to tall before to wide.....add a pretty matching print/floral pattern fabric to the bottom...like layered ruffles...or tiers....we have "added to"...covered up....many an outfit :)
    1. Excellent idea, Stacey. I have added a band of coordinating fabric around the bottom of a store-bought dress to make it last longer. :-)
  14. This outfit brightened my day! Your daughters' Modest Mondays are fantastic and your tip today on hiding the crease mark could not be more perfect since I have a skirt that needs a sneaky cover up for a worn crease line.
    I would love to be entered in for the chance to win a flexi clip.
  15. I love how you fancied up your daughters' already beautiful skirt based on something you read about in a book! That's so cool! And I agree that wearing bright colors on gloomy winter days does seem to put a little more pep in our steps too :)
  16. I sewed my daughter a skirt just like that when she was 8 years old. Since I have one daughter and the rest are boys I passed it down to friends. Very cute. I would love to be entered in to win a lilla rose clip. My daughter wears them every day. She is 14 now.
  18. I would love to be entered into the giveaway! And also did you buy the fabric with those little roses, or put them on yourself. I am trying to find modest dresses for my daughter and she would love something like that! And I sew so I think I could work up such a simple skirt.
    1. The fabric already had those little flowers embroidered on it. Jo-Ann Fabrics always seems to have an assortment of denim with different embroidered designs. The style is very easy, Sarah. I'm sure you could do it! :-)
  20. I would absolutely love to own/win one of the clips. I was first introduced to them here on your blog and have been admiring them for quite some time but hesitate to buy one without knowing how/if it would work in my hair. Thanks for the chance to win one!:)
  21. My hair is begging me for one of these clips! Great blog with very useful tips for the frugal mom over here. And... I must agree, a pop of color helps table the winter blues for a little while. Many of us still have snow (lots!) on the ground and are getting hit again with 5-8inches today. Ugh. But, my daughter is wearing a sundress with a turtle neck underneath and I am wearing one of my favorite summer skirts just to brighten the day a bit. God bless!
